OpenAI is reportedly in the process of developing a web browser that leverages artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to challenge Google Chrome. According to various sources, the AI company has begun conversations with numerous website and app developers regarding this initiative. Additionally, OpenAI is said to be in talks with Samsung to incorporate its AI capabilities into Samsung’s devices. These initiatives, along with the recently launched SearchGPT feature, position OpenAI to take on Google across multiple areas.

OpenAI Reportedly Planning to Develop a Web Browser

A report from The Information, citing insider sources, has provided insights into OpenAI’s aspirations. The company intends to create a native web browser that would integrate with ChatGPT, delivering an AI-enhanced user experience, according to the report.

OpenAI has reportedly engaged in discussions with a variety of developers, including Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline, about constructing this web browser. These discussions are believed to encompass partnerships that would enhance search functionalities in sectors such as travel, food, real estate, and retail, potentially expanding the capabilities of the SearchGPT feature.

Reasons Behind OpenAI’s Browser Ambitions

The report outlines two primary motivations for OpenAI’s decision to create its own browser. Firstly, the firm aims to establish control over the main channel through which users access the internet, thereby increasing the user base for ChatGPT. Secondly, there are rumors of an upcoming feature called ‘Operator,’ which would enable AI agents to perform complex tasks online; OpenAI is keen to avoid dependency on external browsers for permission to utilize this AI agent.

In addition, the report indicates that OpenAI is exploring collaborations to integrate AI functionalities on devices manufactured by Samsung. This partnership is expected to mirror the existing agreement between OpenAI and Apple. Should this collaboration proceed, OpenAI would power AI features on two major competitors to Google’s Pixel smartphones.

Furthermore, OpenAI continues to compete with Google in the search engine landscape through SearchGPT. This feature, found within ChatGPT, is indicated by a globe-shaped web icon and allows the chatbot to generate responses by directly referencing online content, rather than relying solely on its internal knowledge base.
