OpenAI is reportedly in talks to acquire a startup co-founded by CEO Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive. The startup, which remains unnamed, was established last year and is focused on developing AI-driven devices. One of the concept designs is rumored to take inspiration from the original iPhone, although its functions may differ. Currently, it is unclear whether there is a functioning prototype for any of the prospective designs. Reports indicate that OpenAI, located in San Francisco, is weighing both a full acquisition and potential partnership with the startup.

OpenAI Reportedly Considering Buying Jony Ive’s AI Startup

The Information has reported that OpenAI is considering the purchase of the secretive AI venture led by Ive and Altman. Ive, a former Chief Design Officer at Apple, is credited with the distinctive design language of the first iPhone, released in 2007. It’s noteworthy that design elements for the upcoming AI devices are expected to be overseen by Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, acquiring the startup could exceed $500 million for OpenAI. Beyond a complete buyout, the firm is also exploring other options, such as a collaborative partnership. However, the motivations behind OpenAI’s interest in the startup have not been disclosed.

Additionally, the startup is said to be developing multiple product designs, including a phone-like device that lacks a screen. Previous reports have indicated that this device may draw inspiration from the original iPhone, but it will not operate as a conventional phone. The startup is also rumored to be creating designs for AI-enabled household gadgets.

If the acquisition proceeds, the startup’s engineering team would be part of the deal, although it appears that former Apple designers Tang Tan and Evans Hankey may not join OpenAI.

Earlier reports suggested that Ive and Altman were introduced through Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb and an early client of LoveFrom. While Altman is involved with the startup, he is not officially listed as a co-founder, and details regarding his financial investment in the venture remain undisclosed.
