OmniVision has introduced the OV50X, a cutting-edge camera sensor designed for flagship smartphones, marking the next generation following its OV50H release from 2023. This new sensor features a 1-inch design and incorporates OmniVision’s innovative TheiaCel technology, which works in conjunction with the sensor’s lateral overflow integration capacitor (LOFIC). This combination is intended to enhance image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. The company asserts that the OV50X CMOS sensor is capable of delivering “movie-grade video capture” with support for up to 8K HDR video recording, aimed at premium devices.

Currently, the OmniVision OV50X sensor is in the sampling stage, with mass production set to commence in the third quarter of 2025. Consumers can expect to see it integrated into new smartphone models at that time.

Specifications and Features of the OmniVision OV50X

The OV50X is a 1-inch camera sensor measuring 13.1×9.8mm and boasts a maximum resolution of 50 megapixels. It features 1.6-micron pixels, which is an improvement over the 1.2-micron pixels found in its predecessor. OmniVision claims that this sensor can deliver “close to” 100db single-exposure HDR for image capturing, thanks to its advanced TheiaCel technology.

Additionally, the OV50X supports four-cell pixel binning, allowing devices to capture 12.5-megapixel images at speeds of up to 180 frames per second (fps). However, using the sensor’s three-channel HDR feature reduces this frame rate to 60fps.

OmniVision has emphasized the enhanced video recording capabilities of the OV50X, which can capture 8K video while utilizing in-sensor crop zoom and dual analogue gain (DAG) HDR, along with quad phase detection autofocus. This setup circumvents the 35-megapixel threshold typically required for 8K recording.

The company has also shown samples highlighting the sensor’s improved dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Further real-world samples will be needed to fully ascertain the performance improvements offered by the OmniVision OV50X over its predecessor, the OV50H, and evaluate its standing among competing technologies.
