Nvidia has embarked on a new initiative to strengthen its chip manufacturing presence in the United States. The company announced on Monday that it has begun the production of its Blackwell AI GPUs at TSMC’s facility in Phoenix, Arizona. Local firms in Arizona will be responsible for the packaging and testing of these chips.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the largest chip manufacturer globally, recently unveiled plans to invest $100 billion in U.S. semiconductor production. This investment comes after TSMC initiated the production of chips utilizing a 4nm process at its Arizona manufacturing site in January, with aspirations to transition to more advanced 2nm technology by the decade’s end.

While Nvidia did not confirm the specific models of Blackwell chips being manufactured at TSMC’s facility, speculation surrounds the potential inclusion of the newly announced Blackwell Ultra GB300 chip. The Blackwell series is noted for employing TSMC’s bespoke 4NP fabrication process, according to details available on Nvidia’s website.

Furthermore, Nvidia has partnered with electronics manufacturers Foxconn and Wistron to establish supercomputer manufacturing facilities in Texas. The company anticipates that these plants will achieve mass production within a timeframe of 12 to 15 months.

Nvidia emphasized that the manufacturing of AI chips and supercomputers in the U.S. is projected to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs and contribute significantly to the economic landscape over the coming decades.
