Nintendo reported on Friday that it has sold over six million units of the Switch 2 in just seven weeks since its launch in June, reflecting strong early consumer interest.
The new console, which follows the highly successful Switch model, was introduced amid the trade tensions initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, challenging Nintendo’s supply chain strategies.
“The six million units sold highlight the significant pent-up demand for an upgraded version of the original Switch,” remarked Serkan Toto, founder of the gaming consultancy Kantan Games.
In a recent earnings update, the company outlined its early sales figures while maintaining its sales forecast of 15 million Switch 2 units by the end of the financial year in March 2026.
Operating profit for Nintendo rose by 4 percent to JPY 56.9 billion (about $378 million or around Rs. 3,307 crore) in the quarter spanning April to June, surpassing market analysts’ expectations.
The firm noted that U.S. tariffs and alterations in the market landscape did not materially affect its current earnings outlook.
The Switch 2 was released on June 5, featuring titles like Mario Kart World and an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda series, showcasing improved graphics.
During the same quarter, Nintendo sold 8.67 million units of Switch 2 software, with Mario Kart World frequently included in bundle deals for the console.
The recent launch of Donkey Kong Bananza on July 17 achieved a score of 92 on the reviews aggregator Metacritic, indicating widespread acclaim.
“Nintendo should capitalize on its early success and the absence of major titles like GTA VI this year to sustain interest in the Switch 2 through the holiday season,” Toto suggested.
Originally set for a 2023 release, Grand Theft Auto VI has been postponed to 2026, disappointing many fans and impacting competitors like Sony’s PlayStation 5.
Nintendo’s stock closed down 0.75 percent ahead of the earnings report, although shares have risen by approximately one-third this year.
