The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is projected to launch in 2025, with reports suggesting a possible release date as early as March. In May, Nintendo confirmed plans to unveil the successor to their popular hybrid console within the financial year concluding in March 2025. However, recent communications indicate that the debut of the new console may extend beyond the current fiscal timeline.
Nintendo Switch 2 Expected Launch Timeline
Insights from the GamesIndustry.biz podcast reveal that game developers have been advised not to anticipate the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 before April 2025, thus pushing its arrival past the 2025 financial year.
During a recent episode of the GamesIndustry.biz Microcast, Chris Dring, B2B head at the publication, stated, “When Nintendo revealed their financials, they said they were going to announce the successor to the Switch in the next financial year. They didn’t say they were going to release it.” Dring highlighted that in previous financial years when a new console was due to be released, Nintendo typically specified that information.
Dring further noted that developers he has spoken to do not expect the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the current financial year. “No developer I’ve spoken to expects it to be launching in this financial year,” he remarked. Some developers expressed hopes for a release in the early months of 2025, particularly around April or May, rather than later in the year.
The insights shared align with Nintendo’s earlier announcements regarding the Switch successor. While an official unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 is anticipated by the end of March 2025, the actual launch could take place later.
Although Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the details of its next console, it is expected to maintain the hybrid design of the original Switch while boasting upgraded hardware specifications. Since its debut in March 2017, the Switch has sold over 140 million units, making it the third best-selling console of all time, following the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.
In spite of the forthcoming Switch 2, Nintendo continues to roll out new titles for the existing system, including an upcoming installment in The Legend of Zelda series, slated for release later this year. The company aims to sell 13.5 million units of the current Switch during the ongoing financial year.
