Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have initiated a lawsuit against Pocketpair Inc., the developer of the popular survival adventure game Palworld, it was announced on Thursday.
The legal action was filed on Wednesday in the Tokyo District Court, where the companies are seeking both an injunction and damages, alleging that multiple patents have been infringed by the game.
Palworld, marketed as “Pokemon with guns,” gained significant popularity after its launch in mid-January, allowing players to utilize firearms to capture and train adorable creatures referred to as “pals.”
Pocketpair confirmed on Wednesday that it had received notification of the lawsuit but indicated that it has not been informed about the specific patents involved in the allegations.
In response, the company stated it will undertake the necessary legal procedures and investigate the claims made against it.
“It is truly unfortunate that we will be forced to allocate significant time to matters unrelated to game development due to this lawsuit,” the company expressed in its statement.
Earlier in January, The Pokemon Company announced its commitment to addressing any violations of its intellectual property rights.
Additionally, Pocketpair revealed in July that it would collaborate with Sony to broaden the global licensing of Palworld.
