Nintendo is projected to sell 14.7 million units of its new Switch 2 video-game consoles in 2025, according to a forecast released by research firm Omdia on Wednesday. This figure significantly surpasses the sales figures recorded during the launch of the original Switch eight years ago.
This optimistic forecast indicates a strong market reception for the new portable device. Nintendo’s original Switch sold over 13 million units within its first year on the market. The new console is set to launch on June 5, with a suggested retail price of $450 (approximately Rs. 38,390).
The Switch 2 boasts enhancements such as improved resolution, a larger display, and increased memory. While its technical specifications may not outshine competitors like Valve’s OLED Steam Deck or other larger non-portable consoles, the device is complemented by a robust lineup of exclusive games.
Joost van Dreunen, CEO of research firm Aldora, expressed admiration for Nintendo’s approach. Initially cautious about the Switch 2’s potential, he noted, “The technical improvements justify the $450 price point.”
Nintendo has historically not emphasized hardware specifications in its competitive strategy, a stance analysts suggest keeps prices reasonable by avoiding incremental upgrades that add only slight value.
Instead, the company focuses on its library of internally developed titles, which are exclusive to its hardware. This strategy has enabled Nintendo to sell more than 150 million units of the original Switch, encouraging gamers to invest in Nintendo alongside other consoles.
Investor confidence in the new console is reflected in Nintendo’s stock performance, which has seen a rise of over 12 percent this year.
In promotional materials for the new hardware, Nintendo highlighted forthcoming titles from beloved franchises including Mario Kart, Kirby, and Donkey Kong.
James McWhirter, a game analyst at Omdia, praised the launch lineup, stating, “Mario Kart World is the best thing Nintendo could be launching with.” Previous iterations like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have proven popular, with approximately half of all Switch owners having purchased it.
Nintendo also plans to update classic titles, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Mat Piscatella, executive director of Circana’s games division, noted that Nintendo products have historically enjoyed high rates of cross-ownership among different console types.
Since the introduction of its initial Switch console in 2017, competitors such as Valve, Asustek, and Lenovo have launched portable gaming devices priced between $400 and $800. Additionally, Microsoft has suggested it may enter the market with a handheld device featuring Xbox games.
To date, rival platforms have collectively sold around 6 million handheld units, as reported by market research firm IDC.
However, the launch may not satisfy all fans, as there has been disappointment regarding the absence of updates on popular franchises like Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., and Mario following Wednesday’s announcement.
Looking ahead, McWhirter stated, “For 2025, Nintendo is fine. The question is whether Nintendo will be able to release a big blockbuster game every year after that.”
