Naughty Dog, in collaboration with Sony, continues to breathe new life into The Last of Us series. After the release of a remastered version of The Last of Us Part 2 last year, the developer has introduced a significant update that presents the game in chronological order, enhancing the linear narrative experience. This free update for both the PS5 and PC versions of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was announced and made available on Tuesday.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered New Update

The newly released update, titled The Last of Us Part II Remastered Chronological Experience, enables players to engage with the game’s events in chronological sequence. The original version of The Last of Us Part 2 features a non-linear storyline that alternates between the perspectives of characters Ellie and Abby, unfolding over several days and incorporating essential flashbacks that provide narrative context.

Naughty Dog expressed their hopes for this new mode in a post on the PlayStation Blog, stating, “Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative. Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.”

This update not only introduces a chronological mode alongside the original gameplay option but also addresses various bugs and enhances overall game performance. The update is available on PS5 as Patch 2.1.0 and on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store as Patch 1.5.

Additionally, Naughty Dog is launching new rewards with this update, including a fresh PlayStation trophy for completing the game in chronological mode, as well as new skins for Joel and Tommy from Uncharted 4 to be used in No Return, a roguelike survival mode within the game.

Naughty Dog and Sony’s ongoing commitment to The Last of Us franchise has been evident, especially following the success of the HBO adaptation featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, which premiered in 2023. Earlier this year, the developer also released The Last of Us Complete Edition, which bundles The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 Remastered for PS5. This release coincided with the lead-up to the streaming debut of the second season of The Last of Us series.
