A new entry in the God of War series, potentially a smaller spinoff set in the franchise’s original Greek mythology, is rumored to be on track for release later this year. This speculation coincides with the 20th anniversary of the beloved PlayStation franchise, which has introduced a free update for God of War Ragnarök in celebration of the milestone. Since launching the Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarök in 2023, Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the series, has not revealed much about its upcoming projects. However, it has been suggested that the studio may be exploring remasters of earlier titles in the series.
New God of War Title Expected in 2025
Recent reports suggest an entirely new “side-story project” for God of War that will revisit the series’ Greek origins. Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb indicated that instead of releasing a remaster collection, the God of War game is expected to launch sometime in 2025.
“There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection. It’s a new side-story project,” Grubb shared in a post on Bluesky this past Sunday.

Grubb noted he had not been informed about a remaster collection and mentioned that a source indicated an announcement could potentially coincide with the franchise’s anniversary celebration.
“I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary,” Grubb elaborated.
Santa Monica Studio has yet to officially announce details regarding its next title or the future direction of the God of War series. The recent installment, God of War Ragnarök, concluded the epic Norse saga that began with the critically acclaimed 2018 release. However, creative director Cory Barlog has previously hinted that the series could explore other mythologies.
On March 22, Sony celebrated the franchise’s 20th anniversary, releasing a free update for God of War Ragnarök, along with new merchandise, an exhibition, and additional offerings. The Dark Odyssey Collection update introduces new player skins, weapon appearances, armor sets, and various other enhancements to the game.
Despite the 20th anniversary festivities, Sony has not outlined its vision for the next God of War installment. Earlier this year, the company canceled two live-service projects under development, which included a God of War title.
Additionally, Santa Monica Studio is reportedly working on a new intellectual property. While details around their projects remain unclear, a LinkedIn profile of a developer at the studio hinted at this new initiative.
