James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, have engaged in talks with Rocksteady and NetherRealm, two prominent game development studios under Warner Bros. Games, regarding new video games set in the DC Universe. The discussions have centered on the alignment of characters and narratives in these games with the broader vision for the DCU’s films and multimedia endeavors. Gunn has indicated that the debut DCU video game is expected to be at least a couple of years away from release.
New DCU Game A ‘Couple Years’ Away
During a recent DC Studios event, the two executives provided insights into the video game aspects of the revamped DC Universe. Safran remarked, “We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division, and it’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Brothers,” referencing the collaborative approach that marks a shift in Warner Bros. history. Perrette oversees the Global Streaming and Games division at Warner Bros.
Safran further elaborated on their collaboration, stating, “James and I sit with literally the guys that run the studios underneath JB, whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”
Gunn added that he and Safran have already reviewed early designs for ongoing projects and exchanged thoughts on potential storylines and characters. “We talk about when they’re discussing the story, we might say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on something with this character,’ and that helps guide the development,” Gunn explained.
Gunn confirmed that a new DCU video game is indeed a couple of years from launching, with Safran describing the forthcoming projects as “really interesting.”
This announcement follows a Bloomberg report suggesting that Rocksteady Studios is developing a single-player Batman game. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that this new Batman title is also several years from release, although it remains uncertain whether it will integrate into the existing Batman: Arkham series or serve as a reboot within the new DC Universe framework.
Additionally, a new Wonder Woman game is reportedly in development at Monolith Productions, part of WB Games. Having undergone a reboot in 2024, this game has been in the works for several years and is still projected to be distant from its launch.
