On Tuesday at Computex 2024, MSI introduced the Claw 8 AI Plus, a new handheld gaming PC set to succeed the original Claw model that debuted in March. The earlier version received unfavorable reviews primarily due to the underwhelming performance of its Intel Meteor Lake chip, especially when compared to competitors like the Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck OLED, despite its higher price point. The launch of the Claw 8 AI Plus indicates that MSI may soon offer a viable alternative to its console.
Introduction of MSI Claw 8 AI Plus
The Claw 8 AI Plus was showcased during the Computex 2024 expo in Taipei. It will be powered by Intel’s new Lunar Lake chip, with MSI claiming it will be the first gaming handheld to utilize the Intel Core Ultra processor.
Details on pricing for the MSI Claw 8 AI have yet to be revealed, though further information is expected in the upcoming months.
Specifications of MSI Claw 8 AI Plus
According to a blog post, the device boasts an 8-inch Full HD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support.
Reports suggest that the Claw 8 AI Plus may also feature an enhanced battery, potentially up to 80Wh, which would align its performance with the newly unveiled Asus ROG Ally X at Computex 2024. Additionally, MSI revealed that this handheld will include a second USB Type-C port equipped with Thunderbolt 4 capabilities.
To further enhance user experience, the device will come with a wall-mounted charger and improvements to the feel of the LB/RB buttons.
For context, the Asus ROG Ally X is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU featuring Zen 4 architecture with 8 cores, an RDNA 3 integrated GPU, and 24GB of LPDDR5 RAM. In contrast, the Claw 8 AI Plus will have a slightly larger 8-inch Full HD IPS display at a 120Hz refresh rate, though response times have not been detailed.
Collaboration with Fallout
In a notable addition, MSI announced a collaboration with Bethesda to create a limited edition Claw x Fallout handheld gaming PC. This model will feature a 7-inch display, along with a design inspired by key themes from the Fallout franchise, including vaults, Pip-Boys, and robots.
MSI emphasized that this collaboration aims to provide fans with an immersive experience reflective of the post-nuclear apocalypse atmosphere depicted in the game.
