On Wednesday, Mistral unveiled Mistral Code, an artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant tailored for enterprise developers. The Paris-based firm aims to enhance developer productivity in writing and deploying code. This new platform utilizes proprietary AI models, offering enterprises the flexibility to customize its features according to their specific needs. Its launch follows the recent release of Devstral, an open-source coding agent capable of handling various software development tasks.

Mistral Code Is Powered By Four AI Models

In a recent announcement, Mistral explained the functionalities of Mistral Code. Built upon the open-source project Continue, the platform is designed to provide the necessary transparency and granular control that businesses seek. Currently, Mistral Code is offered as a private beta on JetBrains IDEs and VSCode, with plans for broader availability in the near future.

Mistral Code features an integrated development environment (IDE) assistant, along with options for local deployment and compatibility with various enterprise tools. The platform’s capabilities are powered by four proprietary large language models (LLMs).

Among its functionalities, Codestral enhances code completion, while Codestral Embed facilitates code searching and retrieval. Mistral Code will also leverage its predecessor, Devstral, for agent-based coding tasks, complemented by Mistral Medium for chat assistance. Enterprises will have the option to fine-tune or post-train the AI models using private repositories, creating lighter variants tailored to their requirements.

Importantly, Mistral Code supports over 80 programming languages and can employ reasoning for files, Git diffs, terminal output, and issues. The company is actively testing additional features, including the ability to create new modules, update tests, and execute shell commands. These enhancements will come with configurable approvals, ensuring developers maintain control over the process.

Mistral reported that several organizations have already integrated Mistral Code into their operations, including the Spanish bank Abanca, the French state-owned railway company SNCF, and the multinational IT corporation Capgemini.
