Midjourney unveiled its newest image-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, V7, on Friday, marking a significant update since the release of V6 nearly a year ago. Currently in its alpha phase, this model is available for user testing. V7 distinguishes itself as the first in the series to have personalisation activated by default. Additionally, it introduces a feature known as “Draft Mode,” which allows users to generate images at half the cost of the standard mode and with a speed improvement of up to ten times.
New Features and Modes in Midjourney’s V7
On X (previously Twitter), Midjourney’s official account made the announcement regarding the release of V7. The company noted enhancements in the model’s ability to adhere to text prompts, along with improvements in image quality and texture. Furthermore, Midjourney claims that the coherence among various elements in images is superior to that of its predecessor, V6.
A key feature of the V7 model is the personalisation setting, which requires users to evaluate a range of images before they can access the AI tool. This process helps create a personalised profile that tailors the model’s outputs to fit individual user preferences. Although personalisation is on by default, users have the option to turn it off once they gain access to V7.
The introduction of Draft Mode is another highlight. This new feature allows users to experiment with multiple prompts to refine their outputs and make inline edits. Draft Mode can be activated via the web client or by appending “–draft” to the prompt. Though the quality of images generated in Draft Mode is lower compared to the standard output, the model’s behavior and aesthetic consistency remain intact. This mode also supports voice input, promoting a more interactive creative experience.
One of the most exciting new features for our new V7 model is something we call “Draft Mode”. Draft mode is half the cost and 10 times the speed and it might be the best way to iterate on ideas ever. Try it with voice, think out loud and let our ideas flow like liquid dreams. pic.twitter.com/ANfTMC6Ej1

The V7 model also features Turbo and Relax variants, with Turbo mode priced at double the cost of standard output generation. Notably, users should be aware that V7 does not currently support tasks such as upscaling, editing, or retexturing, which will redirect to V6 for completion.
In addition, Midjourney has plans to roll out new features for the V7 model every week or two over the next 60 days, with upcoming enhancements that include character and object references.
