Microsoft is in the process of testing a new real-time translation feature that will be integrated into Live Captions, specifically for Copilot+ PCs utilizing AMD and Intel chipsets. This development was revealed on Wednesday and is currently being showcased through the latest Windows 11 Insider preview build, accessible via the Dev Channel. The company is also working on enhancements for the existing real-time translation capability in Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Furthermore, several bug fixes have been implemented in the Recall feature, which initially launched in preview earlier this year.

Microsoft Testing Real-Time Translation in Live Captions

In a recent blog post, Microsoft announced that its new AI-driven feature will be part of the Windows 11 Insider preview build 26120.2705 (KB5050636) available in the Dev Channel. Previously, real-time translation through Live Captions has only been available for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ devices. With this new update, select users will have the opportunity to test the functionality and provide feedback to the company.

This new translation feature facilitates the translation of audio from over 44 languages into English, enabling subtitles to appear at the bottom of the screen in real time. It can be used during video calls, recordings, and streams and leverages Microsoft’s Copilot in conjunction with its extensive language models.

To utilize this feature, users must configure their device’s language settings to English. While the functionality can translate audio from various languages, it does not support translations from English into other languages.

In addition, improvements have been made to the real-time translation feature on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, allowing translations specifically into Chinese (Simplified).

The translation capabilities will now also extend to a variety of languages, including Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, French, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovene, and Swedish.

Moreover, Microsoft is enhancing the Recall feature as well. Users can activate or deactivate this functionality through the “Turn Windows feature on or off” menu. The company noted that if users encounter a message stating “Make sure Recall is saving snapshots,” even though the settings indicate that snapshot saving is enabled, rebooting the device will resolve this issue.
