Microsoft has introduced an updated launcher application for Windows, reminiscent of Spotlight, allowing users immediate access to commands, applications, and development tools. The revamped version, named Command Palette, builds upon the company’s PowerToys Run launcher, which first emerged almost five years ago, and now offers enhanced capabilities including searching for applications, folders, files, calculations, and system commands.
Available through the PowerToys app, Command Palette appears particularly aimed at power users and developers. This tool enables users to swiftly access Windows commands, launch command prompts, and open shell shortcuts. Additionally, Command Palette features the ability to rapidly launch websites and perform searches across folders and files, similar to functionalities offered by Spotlight or Alfred.
In addition, Microsoft has integrated the previous Window Walker PowerToy into Command Palette, allowing users to seamlessly switch among open windows. One of the key highlights of Command Palette is its full customization potential, supported by extensions that enable users to add extra commands and functionalities beyond the default options.
Command Palette has been accessible since early April, with activation available via the Win+Alt+Space shortcut post-installation. While Microsoft has indicated that “Command Palette is designed to be the successor of PowerToys Run,” both utilities remain available for users currently. Recent adjustments and enhancements to Command Palette were made this week, ahead of the Build developer conference scheduled for May 19th.
