Microsoft has been enhancing its Paint application for Windows 11 over the past few years, introducing features like dark mode, transparency and layers, along with AI-driven image generation. The latest update brings two new features akin to those found in Photoshop.
Users will soon have the option to save their creations as project files, comparable to Photoshop’s .PSD files. Currently, these Paint project files are under testing within the Windows Insiders program in the Dev and Canary Channels. “You can now save your creation as an editable Paint project file and seamlessly pick up where you left off,” stated Dave Grochocki, principal product manager lead for Microsoft’s Windows inbox apps.
These Paint project files will have a .paint extension and will preserve layers within the file. “When you’re ready to return, simply open the file to resume your work in Paint, right where you left off,” Grochocki added.
In addition, Microsoft is introducing opacity sliders for the pencil and brush tools in Paint. “To get started, select either tool and use the slider on the left side of the canvas to set the opacity to your preferred level,” explained Grochocki.
For those who utilize the Snipping Tool in Windows 11, a new quick markup feature is being introduced to facilitate screenshot annotations. This feature includes tools for highlighting, pen usage, and erasing, along with easy image cropping capabilities.
Additionally, Microsoft is rolling out AI-powered features for Notepad, which include writing, summarization, and rewriting functionalities accessible to Copilot Plus PC users. A Microsoft 365 subscription is not required to access these features, although Grochocki mentioned the ability to “seamlessly switch between local and cloud models based on your needs.” The local models on Copilot Plus PCs will enhance the functionality of this Notepad feature.
