OpenAI has officially unveiled its latest GPT-5 models today, and Microsoft is set to integrate these models across its various platforms, including Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and GitHub Copilot. This launch represents a significant update, introducing a new smart mode in Copilot, which was outlined in a previous announcement made last month by Notepad.
The smart mode in Copilot enhances the AI assistant’s capabilities, enabling it to adapt its model selection based on the user’s needs, whether for more complex reasoning or quicker responses tailored to specific tasks. Similar to OpenAI’s provision of GPT-5 to free ChatGPT users, Copilot will also include free access to this new model.
Users of Microsoft 365 Copilot will gain access to GPT-5 starting today. According to a recent blog post from Microsoft, “With GPT-5, Microsoft 365 Copilot enhances its ability to process complex inquiries, maintain focus during extended discussions, and comprehend user context.” In addition, Copilot Studio will incorporate GPT-5 in its updates.
Furthermore, GitHub is expanding its offerings by bringing GPT-5 to all paid GitHub Copilot subscriptions, allowing developers to experience the advancements in coding capabilities brought by OpenAI’s latest model. The GPT-5 model comes in four distinct versions and includes significant upgrades in reasoning and code production quality. It is optimized for complex logical tasks, while GPT-5-chat is tailored for enterprise usage that involves context-aware, multimodal interactions.
Additionally, Microsoft will also enable developers to access GPT-5 via Azure AI Foundry, providing the necessary tools for creating AI-driven applications. With the implementation of a model router, developers will have the ability to select the appropriate model for their specific tasks or inquiries.
