Microsoft is setting its sights on increasing the number of film and television adaptations based on its popular Xbox games. The company is gearing up for the release of a Minecraft film next month, following the success of the Fallout series on Amazon Prime Video last year. Additionally, a Halo series, which is based on Microsoft’s premier gaming property, debuted on Paramount Plus in 2022 but concluded after two seasons.

Upcoming Xbox Adaptations

In a recent report by Variety about the upcoming Minecraft film, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer discussed the company’s evolving approach to adapting its video game properties for film and television. Spencer indicated that the company is committed to producing more content of this nature.

“We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more,” Spencer stated in the interview with Variety. He added, “We learned from doing ‘Halo.’ We learned from doing ‘Fallout.’ So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’”

Details regarding specific Xbox intellectual properties slated for future adaptations were not disclosed by Spencer.

The landscape of video game adaptations has been flourishing recently, with notable success for series like League of Legends’ Arcane and Sony’s The Last of Us, both of which have resonated with audiences. Bethesda’s Fallout franchise also saw its own television adaptation in 2024, created in conjunction with industry veterans Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, resulting in significant acclaim for its faithful depiction of the game. In contrast, the Halo series received mixed reviews and was cancelled in 2024 after two seasons.

On the cinematic side, Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie emerged as a major success in 2023, surpassing $1 billion at the global box office. Conversely, the 2024 adaptation of Borderlands by Take-Two faced critical backlash and underwhelmed at the box office.

Directed by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, A Minecraft Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 4.
