The annual Microsoft developer conference, Build, officially begins today in Seattle, Washington, coinciding with Google’s I/O developer event taking place in Mountain View, California. This year’s Build is anticipated to showcase significant platform updates, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), positioning Microsoft to compete closely with Google’s developments.
Microsoft is offering a free online stream of Build, allowing developers, engineers, and students to participate in-person at Seattle’s conference space. AI is expected to be a central theme this year, highlighting Microsoft’s efforts to create AI agents that operate as digital colleagues alongside human workers.
There may also be announcements regarding Microsoft’s plans to host Elon Musk’s Grok AI model. Earlier this month in my Notepad newsletter, I reported that Microsoft is in talks with xAI concerning the integration of the Grok AI model into its Azure AI Foundry service, potentially leading to a reveal at Build.
In addition, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman might also make an appearance, mirroring his presence at last year’s event. According to information shared in Notepad earlier this year, OpenAI was planning to debut its GPT-5 model in late May; however, recent service modifications and delays have made this timeline less certain. Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have been proactive in showcasing their continued partnership, despite media speculation about tensions between the two companies, illustrated by their recent social media post together.
Nadella will initiate Microsoft’s AI announcements at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET on May 19th, which will be followed by a technical keynote on the second day featuring Jay Parikh, Charles Lamanna, and Scott Guthrie.
