In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced that two of its first-party titles will be making their way to PlayStation 5 in 2025. The real-time strategy games, Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, will be available on the Sony platform, according to a statement from developer World’s Edge on Tuesday. Age of Mythology: Retold, a remastered version of the 2002 classic, is set to debut on March 4, while Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will follow later in the spring with a specific release date yet to be disclosed.
World’s Edge head Michael Mann shared the news through the Age of Empires website, confirming that both games will launch on PS5 alongside new expansions.
“I’m excited to announce that we are expanding player choice by bringing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold to PlayStation 5,” Mann stated. He emphasized the importance of this initiative, remarking, “This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about growing and strengthening the Age community.” Furthermore, players across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation will be able to engage in cross-play.
Age of Mythology: Retold Launching on PS5 in March
Those who opt for the Premium Edition pre-purchase on PS5 will gain five-day early access starting February 27, along with access to the Immortal Pillars expansion and additional benefits. World’s Edge confirmed that all game updates will be released simultaneously on March 4 for all platforms, including Steam, Windows Store, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Scheduled for Spring 2025
While an exact launch date has yet to be determined, World’s Edge indicated that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will arrive on PS5 this spring. This release will coincide with what the studio described as “one of the most exciting DLC expansions for Age II: DE yet,” featuring new content and civilizations for ranked play across PC, Xbox, and PS5.
Additionally, the developer announced that two new DLCs for Age of Empires IV are set to be released in 2025, with the first, titled Knights of Cross and Rose, scheduled for spring.
The addition of these titles follows the forthcoming arrival of the Xbox first-party racing title Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, which was announced last week by developer Playground Games.
Microsoft has pledged to introduce more Xbox titles to competing platforms such as Sony and Nintendo this year, following a shift to a multi-platform strategy initiated in 2024. Xbox chief Phil Spencer remarked last month that no Xbox-exclusive title is off-limits when considering releases on rival systems.
“We’ve found that this approach allows us to create a sustainable business model, which in turn supports our investment in an outstanding game lineup,” Spencer explained during a January interview.
