Meta Platforms is preparing to introduce a web version of its text-focused social media platform, Threads. This move aims to strengthen its competitive stance against X, previously known as Twitter, as the initial increase in user engagement has begun to taper off.
The upcoming web version is expected to enhance the platform’s utility for key user groups, such as brands, corporate accounts, advertisers, and journalists.
While the company has not specified a launch date, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, indicated that it could be imminent.
“We are close on web…,” Mosseri stated in a post on Threads this past Friday. The launch may occur as soon as this week, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
Threads debuted on July 5 as an app for Android and iOS, amassing 100 million users within just five days. However, its popularity has seen a decline as many users have returned to the more established platform X after the initial excitement subsided.
In slightly over a month, the daily active users on the Android app fell from a peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million, according to a report from analytics firm Similarweb dated August 10.
In response, Threads’ management is swiftly rolling out new features, including the ability to set post notifications for specific accounts and to view them in a chronological feed.
Additionally, an upgraded search feature is on the horizon, allowing users to seek out specific posts rather than just accounts.
Recently, Meta unveiled several enhancements to Threads, such as the ability to directly share posts via Instagram DMs, customizing alt-text for photos and videos, and a mention button for tagging accounts.
