Meta’s social media platform Facebook addressed 41 percent of user complaints in April 2023, while Instagram responded to over 54 percent, according to the company’s latest India Monthly Report. The report highlights that Facebook acted on less than 25 percent of user grievances related to content showing partial nudity or sexual acts.
Similarly, Instagram responded to less than one-third of reports regarding violations of its policies concerning “content showing me in nudity/partial nudity or in a sexual act.”
The transparency report revealed other categories where Facebook’s action rate fell below 25 percent, including complaints about “bullying or harassment” (more than 17 percent), “inappropriate or abusive content” (around 18 percent), and fake profiles (over 23 percent).
In total, Facebook received 8,470 user grievances and provided resolution tools in 2,225 instances.
Meta stated that of the remaining 6,245 reports requiring specialized review, it assessed content according to its policies and took action on 1,244 reports.
Details of the specific actions taken on the 1,244 reports were not disclosed.
On its own, Facebook took action against over 27.7 million pieces of content that violated its community standards, spanning 13 different policies.
The largest categories of actions included 21.7 million instances of spam content, 1.6 million for adult nudity and sexual activity violations, and 1.4 million for violent and graphic content.
In cases where users reported their accounts as hacked, Instagram provided resolution tools in only about 11 percent of instances and in about 30 percent of complaints involving nudity or sexual acts.
Meta reported that among the remaining 6,085 reports requiring specialized review, they acted on 1,664 total reports, although specifics on the categories were not included in the report.
Instagram also took action against over 5.46 million pieces of content independently.
The Grievances Appellate Committee (GAC) issued five orders that Meta acted upon. This committee addresses user complaints regarding unsatisfactory resolutions from social media platforms.
