In October 2022, Meta launched its premium headset, the Quest Pro, marking a significant step in its metaverse strategy. The parent company of Facebook is now reportedly channeling substantial resources into the development of a range of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) products. According to sources, Meta is preparing to introduce its inaugural smart glasses equipped with a display in 2025, along with a smartwatch featuring a neural interface designed for controlling the glasses. The official unveiling of the AR glasses is anticipated in 2027.

A recent report from Technology News reveals a potential timeline for Meta’s AR and VR endeavors extending from 2023 to 2027. Citing information from employees within Meta’s Reality Labs, the report indicates that the Meta Quest 3 headset, offering mixed reality capabilities, is set to be announced later this year. This next-generation headset is expected to be priced higher than the current Quest 2 model and is touted to be significantly thinner and more powerful, potentially doubling the performance of its predecessor. Additionally, the Quest 3 may feature a lineup of 41 new applications and games.

The Quest 2 was initially launched at a starting price of $399 (around Rs. 32,000). Meta’s Vice President for VR has reportedly confirmed that nearly 20 million Quest headsets have been sold to date. However, he also noted concerns regarding the ability of the existing Quest model to maintain the interest of new users.

Additionally, plans are underway for the introduction of a more budget-friendly headset codenamed Ventura, slated for release next year. Following this, Meta could unveil an advanced headset, referred to as La Jolla, which will include photorealistic Codec Avatars.

The report also mentions that Meta’s Vice President for AR, Alex Himel, has indicated that a second generation of Ray-Ban Stories, developed in collaboration with Luxottica, is expected to launch this fall.

Looking ahead to 2025, the company plans to release a third generation of smart glasses, featuring a “viewfinder” display that will enable users to view incoming texts, scan QR codes, and translate languages in real time. These glasses will be accompanied by a neural interface band, enabling control through hand gestures. Furthermore, Meta is reportedly in the process of developing a smartwatch that will integrate with the smart glasses.

Moreover, there are indications that Meta intends to unveil its anticipated AR glasses, codenamed Orion, to its employees in 2024, with a public launch potentially following after 2027.
