Meta has unveiled a new partnership with Oakley, a prominent manufacturer of sports performance equipment. This collaboration, named Oakley Meta, aims to create an innovative line of smart glasses designed specifically for cyclists and other athletes. The Oakley Meta smart glasses will follow the prior collaborations between Meta and the Italian eyewear company Luxottica, which produced the Ray-Ban Stories and Ray-Ban Meta Glasses in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
The announcement was made via a post on Instagram from the new account “Oakleymeta.” However, specifics regarding the project were not disclosed, with the post teasing, “The next evolution is coming on June 20.”
While comprehensive details remain scarce, this partnership appears to hint at the development of a successor to the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, which was rumored to be in the works earlier this year. In January, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Meta was working on expanding its smart glasses technology across various brands under Luxottica Group SA.
The upcoming generation of smart glasses is expected to be called “Supernova 2” and is believed to be inspired by the Oakley Sphaera, a multi-sport sunglass model. This positioning indicates that Meta is likely directing this new product towards cyclists and athletes, unlike the existing Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, which cater to a broader audience.
An important design change is anticipated in the camera’s placement. The Ray-Ban Meta Glasses feature a camera on the left side, while the Oakley Meta glasses are likely to incorporate a lens at the center of the frame. This could modify the perspective captured in videos recorded with the smart glasses.
Currently, Meta has not provided additional information regarding the smart glasses’ design, renderings, or specifications. Further details are expected to be revealed on June 20.
