Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to increase the pace of artificial intelligence innovations at his company, so much so that he’s personally recruiting about 50 staffers for a new brain trust, according to a Bloomberg report.

The new “superintelligence group” would be primarily focused on achieving artificial general intelligence, or AGI, which would bring the technology closer to performing as well (or presumably better) than humans at tasks.

According to the report, the new team would work closely with Zuckerberg and the technology they develop would likely be rolled into AI-focused products the company is working on, like Meta AI chatbots and the company’s Meta AI Glasses project. The team would also work with Scale AI, which offers data, AI models and apps to companies. Scale AI’s CEO Alexandr Wang could join Zuckerberg’s team, the report says.

Meta has delayed release of AI models amid speculation that the company is struggling with its Llama AI platform. It is actively competing with some of the largest tech companies in the world, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and even Apple to advance its AI technology.

Unlike OpenAI and Google’s chatbots, Meta’s AI chatbot feels contained within and mainly relevant to its own platforms, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, and isn’t necessarily anyone’s go-to when they’re looking for a general-use chatbot. But if Meta can beat its rivals to AGI, it still stands a chance of competing for your attention in our increasingly AI-driven world.

A representative for Meta did not immediately return a request for comment.
