Recent reports indicate that Instagram and Facebook may soon offer ad-free versions in select countries, a move aligned with the company’s commitment to adhere to privacy regulations. Meta, the parent company, has suggested to regulators the introduction of a subscription model, allowing users to pay a monthly fee to avoid personalized advertisements that rely on their personal data.
The Wall Street Journal has noted that Meta is considering a monthly charge of up to EUR 13 (approximately Rs. 1,130) for EU users seeking an ad-free experience on mobile devices. Users who opt to subscribe via a web browser would be charged EUR 10 (around Rs. 870), as this would eliminate the need to pay in-app purchase commissions to Apple or Google. Additionally, a fee of EUR 6 (about Rs. 520) would apply for each extra account.
Described as the “subscription no ads” plan, or SNA, this initiative was outlined by the company during talks with privacy regulators in Belgium and Ireland last month. However, it appears that users in the United States and other regions will not have immediate access to this ad-free option.
Currently, Meta provides its core services free of charge, with revenue generated predominantly through targeted advertising that utilizes users’ personal information. Recent EU regulations mandate that Facebook and Instagram must allow users to opt out of personal data usage for ad targeting, potentially reshaping the company’s advertising strategies moving forward.
In addition, Meta is reportedly exploring the possibility of paid subscriptions specifically for European users, while those who choose not to subscribe would continue to see advertisements. The social media giant has faced fines in various regions, including Norway, for non-compliance with privacy laws and for utilizing personal data to deliver targeted ads.
