Meta Platforms Inc. will maintain its use of fact checkers in international markets “for now,” despite the company’s decision to discontinue this practice in the United States, according to Nicola Mendelsohn, the head of global business.

The social media giant announced plans to replace its third-party fact-checking system in the US with a community notes system. Mendelsohn discussed the rationale behind this shift during an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Francine Lacqua at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday, indicating that the company intends to observe the effects of the changes before making similar adjustments elsewhere.

Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s CEO, stated earlier this month that the decision to scale back fact-checking in the US stems from concerns that the complex systems were producing “too many mistakes” and unfairly censoring users. The situation presents greater challenges in other regions, particularly due to strict regulations governing misinformation management. For example, the European Union mandates that large platforms actively remove misleading political content and disinformation, with substantial penalties under the Digital Services Act for non-compliance.

Zuckerberg also mentioned that the company plans to collaborate with Donald Trump, who is being sworn in as president, to advocate against nations that impose restrictions on free expression. He criticized the outgoing Biden administration for allegedly endorsing “censorship.”

Trump, who faced a temporary ban from Facebook following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and has described the platform as “the enemy of the people,” welcomed Meta’s policy shift and claimed the company has “come a long way.”
