Meta AI is set to receive significant enhancements, as announced by the company on Monday. The firm aims to make its AI chatbot more tailored to individual users by introducing two new features designed to improve personalization. The first addition is a memory function that allows the chatbot to retain specific information shared by users in their conversations. The second feature offers personalized recommendations by analyzing users’ social media profiles and their activities within the app.
In a recent news release, Meta elaborated on its efforts to enhance user experience with the AI. The company has been testing this memory capability, which enables the chatbot to recall particular information about users over time.
The memory function in Meta AI is designed to operate within individual chats. Users can instruct the AI to remember specific details or allow it to automatically pick up certain information during discussions. For example, if a user requests breakfast suggestions and the chatbot recommends an omelette, the user can inform it that they are vegetarian, leading to future meal suggestions that align with their dietary preference.
While Meta has not specified the types of information the AI will be able to retain, particularly regarding whether sensitive data like financial or medical details will be included, users will be informed whenever a new detail is saved. They will also have the option to delete information from memory as needed.
The memory feature is being rolled out across Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp for iOS and Android users in the US and Canada.
The second new feature allows the chatbot to compile user information to create tailored recommendations. Meta emphasized that this data will be sourced from users’ profiles on Facebook and Instagram, as well as interactions within the app, such as engaging with Reels, liking, and commenting on posts.
In illustrating how this feature will function, Meta explained that if a user seeks weekend activity ideas for their family, Meta AI can identify the user’s home location from Facebook, analyze recent Reels viewed for potential interests, and utilize stored memory information to suggest a music concert. This functionality will also be available on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in the US and Canada.
Importantly, the company did not clarify whether users will have the option to choose whether or not to share their information with Meta AI.
