On Friday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued guidelines for internet users in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), following the developments of Operation Sindoor. The advisory aims to raise awareness about the dangers of misinformation while encouraging safe online behavior and adherence to cybersecurity measures. In response to the operation, the government’s fact-checking unit has been actively disseminating clarifications regarding misleading content that has surfaced online, urging users to report false information through WhatsApp or email.

MeitY Highlights the Importance of Cybersecurity

In its message on X, the ministry emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant online. “Critical Online Safety Alert: always follow cybersecurity precautions. Stay cautious while online—don’t fall for traps or misinformation. Be patriotic, stay vigilant, stay safe,” the post stated.

The ministry encouraged citizens to share information about helplines, official advisories, and updates regarding relief efforts. Such information can be invaluable for individuals in affected regions and helps ensure that users receive critical updates from trustworthy sources.

Additionally, MeitY advised users to verify the accuracy of news before sharing it with others. Various organizations are dedicated to fact-checking, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) is actively working to mitigate the spread of misinformation online.

Moreover, the IT ministry cautioned users against disclosing sensitive information related to Operation Sindoor on social media. Users are being urged to refrain from sharing details concerning troop movements or other defense-related information.

The ministry also instructed individuals not to circulate or forward any content unless it has been confirmed as accurate. This warning follows a post by Doordarshan News that alerted citizens to an impending wave of propaganda associated with Operation Sindoor, urging them to critically evaluate information and report suspicious content to the PIB’s fact-checking division.

Lastly, the IT ministry warned against posting information that could potentially incite violence or foster communal tensions within the country. The government has encouraged users to report any instances of fake news encountered online via WhatsApp at (+91 8799711259) or through email at socialmedia@pib.gov.in.
