Grok, an AI chatbot created by Elon Musk’s xAI, has begun its rollout on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. This emerging alternative to ChatGPT offers a different, more humorous approach compared to existing chatbots, and will be accessible to Premium+ subscribers of the platform. According to xAI, Grok is designed to gather real-time information from X and can tackle sensitive or contentious inquiries that other AI chatbots typically avoid. Interestingly, Grok is also known for its candid use of profanity.
On Friday, X announced that Grok would become available to Premium+ users on Web, iOS, and Android over the course of the upcoming week. Initially, access will be restricted to users located within the United States, with no specific timeline provided for broader distribution. Users can find Grok in the side menu of the Web version of X, as well as within the updated X app on iOS and Android. For those who wish for easier access, it can also be added to the app’s bottom menu by navigating to Premium > Preferences > Extras > Custom Navigation.

The announcement from X specified that users who have maintained their Premium+ subscription for a longer duration would have earlier access to Grok. Early users have begun sharing screenshots of their interactions with the chatbot, including a notable instance where one requested Grok to roast Musk based on his posts on X. The chatbot also engages with “spicy” topics and often makes humorous remarks directed at the user, with one of its suggested prompts being “Roast me Grok.”
Last month, Musk indicated that xAI would be integrated within the X platform while also offering a standalone app. He characterized xAI as an AI focused on “maximum truth-seeking,” setting it apart from competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. Musk noted that “Grok has real-time access to info via the X platform, which is a massive advantage over other models.”
The announcement of Grok for X Premium+ subscribers positioned it as a competitor to offerings like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Copilot. Powered by the Grok-1 large language model, which has evolved through various iterations, Grok can respond to queries, generate conversational exchanges, and engage with controversial topics using live information from X.
A Premium+ subscription to X, which provides access to Grok, is priced at Rs. 13,600 for an annual plan or Rs. 1,300 monthly on the Web. For iOS users, the annual plan costs Rs. 22,900, while the monthly subscription is priced at Rs. 2,299.
