At the recent Xbox Games Showcase, Activision officially confirmed the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, with a full reveal scheduled for this summer. Prior to issuing any official announcements, however, details regarding new multiplayer modes for the title have leaked via the Call of Duty app. The leak includes four purported images from an internal playtest, featuring two new gameplay modes: a 20v20 wingsuit mode and a 6v6 mode. Accompanying the images are screenshots showcasing gameplay from both modes.
Details on Leaked Modes
CharlieIntel, a well-known portal for Call of Duty news, shared information about these leaks on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, posting four screenshots from an internal playtest exclusive to developers. The images reportedly went live due to a mishap in which a ‘message of the day’ intended for developers was accidentally posted to the Xbox Call of Duty app.
According to the leaked content, two new multiplayer modes are on the way: Skirmish, a 20v20 wingsuit mode involving teams tackling objectives on a vast map, and Overload, a 6v6 mode where teams vie to control an EMP device that needs to be delivered to the opponent’s headquarters.
“An internal, developer-only Black Ops 7 playtest was set to begin this weekend, but they mistakenly pushed the message of the day to everyone on Xbox via the Call of Duty app,” CharlieIntel reported in their post.
The official description of the Skirmish mode highlights: “Two teams of 20 fight to complete objectives across a large map. Capture points of interest, destroy payloads, and transmit valuable data to score. Use your wingsuit to flank and reach objectives before your enemy. The first team to reach the score limit wins!”
The Overload mode is depicted as follows: “Two teams of six players each compete to control a neutral EMP device that must be delivered to the enemy HQ for scoring. Reach the score limit and claim victory by delivering multiple EMP devices!”
While Activision has not yet provided a comprehensive list of modes for the multiplayer aspect of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the company has teased an innovative co-op campaign alongside a signature multiplayer experience featuring new maps. The beloved Zombies mode is also confirmed to return. Fans can anticipate a full reveal of Black Ops 7 this summer.
The development of the new Call of Duty installment is being handled by Treyarch and Raven Software, marking the first consecutive release in the Black Ops series. Set more than 40 years after the events of Black Ops 6, the narrative will follow the character David Mason from Black Ops 2. The game is set to launch later this year on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X, and it will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on its release day.
