On Wednesday, OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, announced its acquisition of io, the artificial intelligence hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. Since this acquisition, details have begun to emerge regarding a new AI device reportedly in development by these two companies. Industry analysts suggest that the device is in the prototype stage and will be slightly larger than the previously unsuccessful Ai Pin from Humane, while potentially maintaining the sleekness reminiscent of the iPod Shuffle. Mass production for this device is projected to begin in 2027, with plans for assembly and shipping likely to take place outside China to avoid geopolitical tensions.
Details on the Jony Ive-OpenAI AI Device
As highlighted by TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the prototype of the AI device is slightly larger than Humane’s contextual computer. Kuo describes the design as highly compact, with a level of elegance comparable to the iPod Shuffle. However, as it is still in the prototype phase, the final design and specifications remain open to modifications.

The upcoming AI device is expected to include cameras and microphones for environmental detection, which would enhance contextual awareness for users wearing the device around their necks. While it will not feature a display, it is designed to connect with smartphones and PCs, leveraging their computational power and display functionalities.
Kuo predicts that the mass production of the AI device will commence in 2027, with assembly and shipping potentially taking place in Vietnam, distancing the production from the geopolitical challenges and tariff disputes between China and the U.S.
Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has given previews of the device to the company’s employees. He mentioned that the device would be suitable for use in a pocket or on a desk, in addition to serving as a wearable AI neckpiece. Altman stressed that the AI device is not intended to be glasses, a concept that Jony Ive has expressed skepticism about. Instead, it is envisioned as a third essential device alongside a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, which could play a significant role in the user’s daily tech interactions.
