Jio Platforms is teaming up with major tech firms, including Nvidia, with aspirations to revolutionize the Indian artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, mirroring its success in the telecom sector through competitive pricing and unlimited mobile data offerings. Reports indicate that Jio is collaborating with several companies to jointly develop native large language models (LLMs). The company aims to provide enterprises with cost-effective and tailored AI-as-a-service solutions, along with agentic AI applications. Furthermore, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is engaged in the government’s India AI Mission initiative.

Jio Platforms Is Reportedly Preparing Its AI Playbook for India

The Economic Times has reported that Jio Platforms is now setting sights on transforming the AI sector in India by providing affordable AI tools and agentic applications tailored to enterprises. An unidentified senior executive mentioned that Jio is working with Nvidia and other technology leaders to deliver hardware support necessary for AI inference.

In line with its strategy, Jio Plans to join the India AI Mission, a sizable Rs. 10,300 crore government initiative, with plans to introduce GPU-as-a-service for startups and researchers “at the most competitive prices in the world.” Reportedly, the firm has partnered with Nvidia to obtain its Blackwell GPUs.

The unnamed executive emphasized that Jio is developing infrastructure across three main AI domains: devices, cloud services, and high-speed broadband networks, all aimed at providing affordable AI solutions for enterprises and individuals alike.

Delving into the financial framework for the GPU service, the executive elaborated to the Economic Times, “The AI Mission serves as a government initiative to provide GPUs at a subsidized rate. For instance, if the cost is set at Rs 25 per GPU hour, the government will cover Rs 5-10. We (Jio and other vendors) will compete to lower these prices from the Rs 25 mark.”

Earlier this year, Jio Platforms revealed Jio Brain, a 5G-integrated AI and machine learning platform designed for enterprises. The executive also indicated that the company is exploring various avenues for monetizing this offering.

The current AI landscape in India is somewhat fragmented, with various players providing distinct services. While tech giants like Google, Amazon, Nvidia, and Microsoft are striving to penetrate the market with comprehensive AI solutions, high enterprise pricing for these products is hindering widespread adoption of the technology.

If Jio can effectively bundle front-end AI tools, backend LLMs, and necessary cloud services at competitive rates, it could significantly boost the adoption of AI technologies among businesses.
