The iPhone 17 series is anticipated to launch in September this year, but speculation regarding the iPhone 18 series is already surfacing, with a release expected in 2026. Reports suggest that Apple plans to introduce a major redesign for its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max variants. A recent leak from China indicates that the company is exploring under-display Face ID technology for these Pro models. In contrast, the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18 Slim (formerly known as Air) may retain the Dynamic Island feature.

Testing Under-Display Face ID

The base models, iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air, are expected to have a “regular 2+1 hole” design, suggesting a visible front camera for these versions.

While the iPhone 18 Pro models aim for a more advanced design, the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air are likely to continue employing the Dynamic Island feature, similar to the current iPhone 16. This strategic choice could serve to highlight the differences between the Pro and standard models.

The introduction of under-display Face ID is viewed as a transformative advancement for Apple’s device lineup, promising a more fluid screen experience.

A recent report proposed that this design evolution could pave the way for a fully immersive screen experience without visible cutouts or bezels in future iPhone models. At least one model scheduled for 2027, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, is rumored to incorporate an edge-to-edge display, potentially achieved by positioning the front camera beneath the screen.
