Apple is anticipated to unveil its iPhone 17 series, marking a potential shift by integrating 120Hz displays across all models for the first time. Historically, the company has limited its higher-refresh-rate ProMotion displays to its iPhone Pro variants, with standard models featuring 60Hz screens. Recent speculation suggests that both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air could be equipped with improved 120Hz displays; however, new information from a Chinese source indicates that this may not be entirely accurate.

iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air May Feature Standard 120Hz Displays

Prominent display analyst Ross Young had previously suggested that Apple was planning to integrate ProMotion technology across the full range of the iPhone 17 lineup this year. Various rumors from multiple sources have pointed towards an improvement in display capabilities for the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air.

Since its launch with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, ProMotion displays have been exclusive to Apple’s Pro models. They enhance the user experience by providing smoother visuals and quicker responsiveness, particularly noticeable during activities such as scrolling and gaming.

For context, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus previously featured OLED displays with a standard refresh rate of 60Hz, while their Pro counterparts boasted 120Hz OLED screens with ProMotion capabilities. This model differentiation has been a consistent approach in Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 series as well.

ProMotion technology supports refresh rates up to 120Hz and can adapt down to as low as 1Hz to save battery life during less demanding tasks. This functionality also enables features like the always-on display found in the Pro models.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are set to make their debut at an Apple event in September, potentially alongside the expected iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Reports suggest that the standard iPhone 17 may be powered by the A18 chip, while the iPhone 17 Air could feature an A19 chip. In contrast, the Pro models are rumored to utilize an A19 Pro chip.
