Apple has unveiled the iOS 26 Beta 2 update for iPhones, introducing a range of enhancements and addressing various bugs. While the update primarily focuses on performance improvements, it appears to hint at an upcoming device as well. Reports indicate that the code embedded in the update references the screen resolution of a yet-to-be-announced iPhone model, which is expected to be named the iPhone 17 Air. This new device is anticipated to fit into the lineup between the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Screen Resolution of the iPhone 17 Air
As highlighted by a recent report from 9to5Mac, the iOS 26 Beta 2 update introduces a new asset linked to the Clownfish wallpaper. Analysis of the code suggests that it pertains to a device with a resolution of 420 x 912 points. This equates to a display resolution of 1,260 x 2,736 pixels when using the 3x retina mode.
Currently, no iPhone models on the market possess this specific resolution, indicating that the upcoming device will likely feature a display larger than that of the iPhone 16 Pro but smaller than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The speculation points towards this model being the iPhone 17 Air, which might take the place of the existing Plus variant currently featured in the flagship series. Expectations suggest it will have a 6.6-inch screen that aligns with the leaked display specifications.
Expected Specifications for the iPhone 17 Air
The anticipated iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be the slimmest in Apple’s history, measuring approximately 6.25mm thick. It is expected to feature a 6.6-inch Super Retina XDR display with a 60Hz refresh rate, although it will likely forgo the ProMotion capabilities available in Pro models.
On the camera front, the iPhone 17 Air may include a single 48-megapixel rear camera, similar to that of the recently released iPhone 16e. It is expected to be driven by the A19 chipset, enabling various Apple Intelligence features. Additionally, the device might incorporate Dynamic Island technology, with rumors circulating about Apple also testing in-display Face ID, which could further streamline the device’s design.
In terms of functionality, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to support MagSafe charging, feature a Camera Control button, and include an Action button, as well as Apple’s C1 modem for enhanced connectivity.
