Apple is expected to unveil the next version of its iPhone operating system, iOS 19, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, scheduled for this summer. A significant aspect of this update may involve the expansion of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that first emerged at WWDC 2024. This suite was made available to iPhones in September alongside iOS 18. However, recent reports suggest that iOS 19 might not introduce new AI features but focus on broadening the existing functionalities across more applications.
iOS 19 to Expand Apple Intelligence Capabilities
In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that Apple likely will not debut fresh AI capabilities at WWDC 2025, opting instead to enhance current capabilities across a broader range of apps.
While various features of Apple Intelligence have already rolled out with iOS 18.1 and its updates, a much-anticipated enhancement is still pending. During WWDC 2024, Apple showcased a sophisticated iteration of Siri designed to access user data and screen content for providing personalized answers. Although the company indicated a planned release for this feature with the iOS 18.4 update in April, it has reportedly encountered delays that push its launch beyond the immediate future.
Jacqueline Roy, a spokesperson for Apple, reportedly informed Daring Fireball that the development of these features will require more time than initially anticipated, with a projection for rollout in the coming year.
The internal dynamics of Apple’s AI division have also been affected, with Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, and other team members expressed serious concerns regarding the performance of Apple Intelligence features. Based on personal assessments, they noted that these features often did not function correctly or as promised. Gurman suggests that some within the company believe that the development of these features may need to be completely overhauled, which could introduce additional delays. The anticipated release timeline for these capabilities has now been pushed to at least next year, according to the report.
