Instagram is currently exploring new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, following the launch of Meta AI by its parent company. Recent reports suggest that the platform is developing an AI message-writing tool that will enable users to edit, paraphrase, and adjust the style of their written communications within Instagram direct messages (DM). Additionally, Threads, Meta’s latest social media endeavor, is also testing a feature that allows users to save posts for later reference.
Mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi disclosed information about the AI writing feature on Thursday via X, formerly known as Twitter. He shared a screenshot showing a highlighted text option that includes the feature labeled Write With AI. In response to an inquiry about its functionality, Paluzzi indicated that the feature would likely rephrase messages in various styles, akin to Google’s Magic Compose.
Details about the AI message-writing feature remain sparse, primarily because users must highlight text for the option to be activated. This implies that the AI does not autonomously generate messages within the text field, positioning it more as an AI text editor. Existing tools with similar functionalities typically allow users to paraphrase, summarize, extend text, modify tone, change structural style, and incorporate additional contextual information.
It is important to note that Instagram’s AI already has the capability to generate content through a different mechanism. Users can invoke the AI by entering “@Meta AI” followed by their message in any chat, prompting the AI to respond. This response will be visible to other participants in the chat. The company maintains that the AI only processes messages where it has been tagged, ensuring that other communications remain private. Furthermore, the AI cannot address follow-up questions unless specifically tagged. Currently, Meta AI, which drives Instagram’s AI features, is only accessible in the United States.
In a separate development, Threads is also introducing a bookmarking feature. This will allow users to save their preferred posts by clicking on a “Save” option. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, indicated that this new functionality will operate similarly to the Bookmark feature available on Instagram. While a release date for this feature has yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to be available to beta testers and regular users in the near future.
