Instagram has launched a new feature enabling users to download Reels from public accounts. The announcement was made by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, via his broadcast channel on the platform. Currently, this feature is being rolled out exclusively to users in the United States.

Previously, users could only share Reels from public accounts within their Stories or through direct messages. The app offers functionality to save Reels, which can be accessed in the saved Reels tab. With this latest update, users will have the ability to download Reels and share them across other platforms, including WhatsApp.

According to Mosseri’s update, US users can now download Reels directly to their camera rolls. By tapping on the share icon, they can choose the Download option to save the content to their devices. However, it’s important to note that only Reels shared from public accounts are eligible for download; those from private accounts remain inaccessible. Additionally, owners of public accounts have the option to disable downloading of their Reels through the app’s settings.

A visual shared by Mosseri illustrates the new Download option, which appears alongside features like Add to Story and Copy Link. The image indicates that downloaded Reels will feature an Instagram logo and the username of the account that created the content.

Details regarding the potential rollout of this feature in other countries have not yet been disclosed. Users are still able to download their own Reels from their drafts without any watermarks. Moreover, they can share Reels in their Stories, through Instagram direct messages, or by copying links to send via other social media platforms, including WhatsApp. The ability to save Reels directly to camera rolls simplifies sharing across various apps without needing to copy links.

In related news, there are reports indicating that Instagram is developing an AI-based chatbot feature. This new tool is expected to allow users to interact with AI agents capable of answering questions, offering advice, and composing messages.
