Insomniac Games, the creative force behind PlayStation’s acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series, proposed the development of Resistance 4 to Sony, but the idea was ultimately declined, according to comments made by the studio’s founder over the weekend. Insomniac, celebrated for its notable franchises including Ratchet & Clank and Spyro, previously developed three entries of the Resistance series on PlayStation 3. This first-person shooter franchise has not returned with a new installment since the release of Resistance 3 in 2011.
Insomniac Proposed Resistance 4
Ted Price, the founder and CEO of Insomniac Games, disclosed during an appearance on Kinda Funny Gamescast that the idea for a fourth Resistance game was pitched to their parent company, Sony, but it did not get the go-ahead.
“We did pitch that one,” remarked Price about the potential for Resistance 4, noting that the concept was compelling. He explained, “In terms of timing and market opportunity, it didn’t work out.”
Price elaborated on the interest from the Insomniac team, expressing that many members were enthusiastic about exploring the Resistance narrative further. He emphasized, “I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are. We spent a lot of time working on backstory and brainstorming on where we could take this in the future.”
These remarks come on the heels of Price’s earlier announcement in January regarding his retirement from the gaming industry at the end of March.
As a creative director on titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, Price conveyed his desire to see the Resistance storyline develop further, although he confirmed that there were no immediate plans for the studio to pursue this direction. “We love the fan response and we know that fans ask pretty regularly if we’re going to do another Resistance. There’s no answer to that, but I will say we pitched Resistance 4 and it was cool,” he stated.
Nevertheless, Price did not dismiss the possibility of Insomniac, currently engaged with Marvel’s Wolverine, revisiting the Resistance franchise in the future. “Fortunately, because we’re part of Sony, and Sony owns the intellectual property to Resistance, we will always have the opportunity to revisit Resistance,” he noted.
The Resistance series is set in an alternate history during the 1950s, featuring an invasion of Earth by a hostile alien force, and consisted of three mainline titles released on the PS3 from 2006 to 2011. Since then, Insomniac Games has shifted its focus to developing additional Ratchet & Clank games, as well as titles like Sunset Overdrive and the Marvel’s Spider-Man series.
With a career spanning 30 years, Price, who established Insomniac Games in 1994, announced his retirement last month, feel it was the appropriate moment to step down. He confirmed the promotions of Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider, and Jen Huang to the roles of co-studio heads at Insomniac.
