India ranked among the leading nations in requesting content removal from Twitter last year, according to the microblogging service’s latest blog update. On Tuesday, Twitter disclosed details regarding its health and safety initiatives, revealing that it received around 53,000 legal requests from governments worldwide to eliminate content during the first half of 2022, from January 1 to June 30.
The five countries with the highest number of requests for account information included India, followed by the United States, France, Japan, and Germany.
The blog post stated, “Twitter continues to take action on content that violates our Rules and protects users’ rights in response to government legal requests.”
In the same period, the platform took measures to remove over 6.5 million pieces of content that breached its guidelines, marking a 29 percent increase compared to the latter half of 2021.
Twitter also enforced actions on more than 5 million accounts during this timeframe, reflecting a 20 percent rise, while nearly 1.6 million accounts were suspended for rule violations, which is an increase of 28 percent.
The violations leading to content removals or account suspensions encompassed various issues, including abuse and harassment, child sexual exploitation, hacked materials, hate speech, impersonation, non-consensual nudity, threats of violence, sharing private information, promoting self-harm or suicide, sensitive media, terrorism, and violent extremism.
“We plan to provide more updates about our approach to transparency reporting later this year,” the blog post concluded.
