Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecommunications giant, is gearing up to test its latest artificial intelligence processor, aiming to rival some of Nvidia’s higher-end offerings, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal published on Sunday.
As stated in the report, Huawei has reached out to several technology firms in China to explore the technical feasibility of its new chip, named the Ascend 910D.
The company anticipates that its forthcoming Ascend AI processors will surpass Nvidia’s H100 in performance, with the first sample batches expected to be available by late May, the report noted.
Furthermore, a separate report from Reuters on Monday indicated that Huawei is set to commence mass production of its advanced 910C artificial intelligence chip for Chinese clients as early as next month.
For years, Huawei and other Chinese tech firms have faced significant challenges in developing high-end chips capable of competing with Nvidia’s solutions, particularly for training algorithms that enhance decision-making capabilities.
In an effort to curb China’s technological advancements, especially those benefiting its military, the United States has restricted access to Nvidia’s most sophisticated AI products, including its flagship B200 chip.
The sale of the H100 chip was prohibited in China by U.S. authorities in 2022, even prior to its market release.
While Nvidia has opted not to provide a comment, Huawei has yet to respond to a Reuters inquiry for further information.
