Google’s AI-driven summaries for search results aim to provide quick overviews, leveraging artificial intelligence technology. While these features serve as a convenient tool for users seeking a broad understanding of search outcomes, they can also yield inaccuracies that stem from unreliable sources. For those who prefer a more traditional search experience that omits these AI-generated summaries, there are two straightforward methods to refine the results page, ensuring it contains only relevant links to their queries.

Whether motivated by a desire for quicker searches or a preference for a cleaner interface, users might wish to disable Google’s AI summaries. There are options available to customize the search bar settings in the browser, or individuals can opt for a more unconventional approach to remove these features entirely.

Steps to Disable Google AI Overviews in Search Results by Default

This process allows users to hide AI overviews across all search results without needing additional browser extensions. It has been tested on both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge for Windows and Android. It should work on any browser that supports custom search engines. Below are instructions based on Google Chrome for Windows.

  1. Open Google Chrome, click the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner, and select Settings.

  2. Navigate to Search engine > Manage search engines and site search.

  3. Locate the Site search section and click the Add button.

  4. In the pop-up window, name your custom search engine and enter the following URL in the field:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14

  5. Click Save, then select the three-dot menu again and click Make default.

  6. Type your search term into the address bar and press Enter to view results without AI overviews.

Alternate Method: Using Expletives to Bypass Google AI Overviews

For users accessing a shared device who wish to avoid changing any settings, or those wanting a quick solution to view results without altering browser settings, there’s an unconventional method. As highlighted by Lifehacker, simply adding a swear word at the beginning of the search query can bypass the AI overviews.

  1. Start Google Chrome on your device.
  2. Enter your search query.
  3. Prefix the query with an expletive.
  4. Press Enter to receive search results without the AI overviews.
