Workers within the SAG-AFTRA union representing video game actors have been on strike since July 26, primarily over concerns regarding the integration of artificial intelligence in game production. The union and key video game developers were unable to reach a consensus on measures to safeguard against the use of AI in their projects. As a consequence of the strike, numerous video games in production could experience delays. Earlier speculation suggested that Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 might be among those projects affected. However, recent updates indicate that its development will proceed without interruption from the union’s actions.
GTA 6 Recognized as ‘Exempt’ from Strike
According to a report from Kotaku, Grand Theft Auto 6 has been deemed exempt from the ongoing strike, allowing voice actors to continue their involvement in the game. This information was confirmed by a spokesperson for the publishers currently in negotiations with SAG-AFTRA. Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, is one of the publishers impacted by the strike.
“I can confirm GTA VI is exempt,” the spokesperson stated to Kotaku, adding that any project already underway prior to September 2023 would also be excluded from the strike’s limitations.
GTA 6 is anticipated for release in 2025, though Rockstar Games has yet to announce an official launch date.
Concerns Surrounding AI in Game Development
On July 26, SAG-AFTRA members who serve as voice actors in video games initiated a strike against all companies affiliated with the Interactive Media Agreement. The labor dispute arose after lengthy negotiations lasting over a year and a half failed to yield a satisfactory agreement. SAG-AFTRA has expressed that video game companies have not provided “plainly affirm[ed], in clear and enforceable language,” assurances regarding the protection of performers’ rights concerning AI.
The organizations involved in the ongoing negotiations and facing the strike include prominent names such as Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Llama Productions, Take 2 Productions, VoiceWorks Productions, and WB Games.
Amidst the striking workers’ concerns, the video game industry has seen an increase in AI technology’s presence in development processes. A recent report highlighted that the use of generative AI has resulted in job reductions within the sector. Furthermore, Activision, known for its Call of Duty franchise, has introduced an AI-generated item for purchase on its online platform.
