Since its launch in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has maintained a robust presence across various gaming platforms, largely bolstered by the popularity of GTA Online. With the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI set for next year, interest in GTA V continues to thrive among players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. New reports suggest that the game might soon reach an even wider audience, potentially on mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch, albeit through unofficial channels. Third-party developers are said to be working on ports for Android, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.
A post from GTA Focal, a dedicated Grand Theft Auto news outlet, indicated last week that a collective of modders is endeavoring to port GTA V to these additional platforms utilizing the source code that was leaked last December.
According to the post, “A group of modders are trying to port GTA 5 to the Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Android thanks to the source code leak from December.” The accompanying media featured a loading screen for GTA V with error messages displayed on the Nintendo Switch and Android devices, indicating that the port is still in its developmental stages.
The initiative to adapt GTA V for Android and Nintendo Switch is primarily led by modding communities and external developers, as Rockstar Games has not announced any official ports for these systems. In 2022, Rockstar released an “Expanded & Enhanced” version of GTA V for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, offering upgraded visuals and performance tailored for the latest consoles.
In December 2023, Rockstar Games experienced a significant security breach, leading to the leak of the full source code for GTA V, along with code and files related to GTA VI and a rumored sequel to the 2006 game Bully.
As of February 2024, GTA V has achieved over 195 million copies sold globally. Originally available on PS3 and Xbox 360, the title has since been released on additional platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The highly anticipated sequel, GTA VI, was teased with a trailer in December of last year and is slated for release on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2025.
