The artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok, created by xAI, is reportedly in the process of developing a file editor feature. A reliable source has indicated that the Elon Musk-led company is working on functionality that may allow for the manipulation of various file types, including spreadsheets. This will enable users to interact with Grok while requesting alterations to different documents, potentially enhancing the tool’s overall usability. This development rumor emerges ahead of the anticipated release of the Grok 3.5 AI model.
New File Editing Feature Expected to Include Voice Command Support
Nima Owji, an independent app researcher, disclosed details about this evolving feature in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The information was accompanied by a screenshot displaying a side panel for Grok integrated into a spreadsheet interface.
In his post, Owji explained that xAI is actively developing the file editor feature, which will facilitate functionality for spreadsheets. “You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you’re editing the files,” the source remarked. However, there was no mention of other file types that might be included.
Grok entered the competitive AI chatbot market later than its counterparts, launching in November 2023, roughly a year after ChatGPT and more than six months following the debut of Gemini (formerly known as Bard), Copilot, and Claude.
This timing has necessitated that Musk and xAI play catch-up with established competitors. In April, Grok finally incorporated features such as computer vision, multilingual audio support, and web search capabilities, which had already been introduced by rival platforms. The potential for file editing aligns Grok more closely with other AI services, which have already offered similar functionalities.
If these leaks hold true, the introduction of collaborative file editing could position Grok ahead of rivals like ChatGPT and Claude. Presently, only Gemini offers this feature to its paid Workspace users. Nevertheless, the exact implementation details of this new capability remain uncertain until xAI provides further official clarification.
Additionally, there are expectations for the imminent release of Grok 3.5, the next iteration of the large language model (LLM), and the file editing capacity may be integrated into this updated version.
