Grok, the AI chatbot created by xAI, is poised to introduce a file editing feature, according to a recent tip from an insider. This feature is likely to accommodate multiple file formats, including spreadsheets, allowing users to engage with Grok while requesting modifications to various documents. Should this information prove reliable, it could enhance the functionality of the chatbot significantly. Notably, this revelation coincides with xAI’s upcoming launch of the Grok 3.5 AI model.
Prospective File Editing Functionality to Include Voice Commands
Nima Owji, an independent app researcher, shared insights on X (formerly Twitter) about the development of this new feature. In his post, he provided a screenshot depicting a side panel of Grok integrated into a spreadsheet interface.
Owji noted that xAI is actively working on the file editor feature, which will incorporate spreadsheet support. He emphasized, “You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you’re editing the files.” However, he did not specify the additional file types that may be included in this capability.
Grok entered the AI chatbot arena later than its competitors, launching in November 2023—almost a year after ChatGPT and over six months following Gemini (previously known as Bard), Copilot, and Claude.
This delayed entry meant that Musk’s xAI project has been striving to keep pace with its rivals. In April, Grok gained functionalities such as computer vision, multilingual audio support, and a web search tool, enhancements that had already been adopted by competing platforms. The ability to edit files, a feature that is standard on other AI services, is also on the horizon for Grok.
If the leaked details are accurate, the collaborative file editing feature could position Grok favorably against competitors like ChatGPT and Claude. At present, only Gemini has offered this functionality to its paid Workspace subscribers. Nonetheless, the exact implementation of this feature remains uncertain until xAI issues an official statement.
Additionally, xAI’s anticipated release of the Grok 3.5 large language model suggests that the file editing function may be integrated with this forthcoming AI iteration.
