OpenAI has maintained a level of secrecy surrounding its next-generation artificial intelligence model, known as GPT-5. Recent statements from company officials, however, have begun to outline potential features and capabilities that users can anticipate upon its release. An executive at OpenAI suggested that GPT-5 may see a combination of the GPT and o-series models, leading to a large language model (LLM) characterized by enhanced reasoning abilities and multimodal support. Although no specific launch date has been confirmed, speculation indicates that GPT-5 could be unveiled sometime in July or August.
GPT-5 May Become OpenAI’s Most Comprehensive AI Model
Romain Huet, the Head of Developer Experience at OpenAI, recently led a discussion at the Viva Technology conference in Paris. In a video clip shared by Tibor Blaho, a lead engineer at AIPRM, Huet emphasized that the organization aims to create a “net new great frontier model” with GPT-5.
“The breakthroughs in reasoning from the O-series and the advancements in multimodality from the GPT-series will come together to form GPT-5,” he explained.
This commentary aligns with previous remarks made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who indicated in a post on X that he hopes to merge the GPT series and o-series by 2025. Altman has shown interest in phasing out the o-series, but it remained unclear if the planned unification would occur with GPT-5 or subsequent AI models.
In addition, the upcoming GPT-5 model may feature an integration with an AI agent known as the Operator. In a Reddit discussion, Jerry Tworek, OpenAI’s Vice President of Research, mentioned that the goal for this new frontier LLM is to enhance its functionalities to the point where users will not need to frequently switch between models.
The VP hinted that the new AI model will aim to outshine all its predecessors in performance metrics, while also being compatible with the Operator AI agent. For context, the Operator is a Computer-Using Agent (CUA) designed to autonomously perform a variety of tasks on users’ devices and online. It was first introduced in January and later extended to Pro subscribers in February.
While no definitive release date has been disclosed, Altman recently hinted during a live stream that GPT-5 could debut in the summer months. With only two months remaining in this season based on the US calendar, the AI community is gearing up for a potential launch in July or August.
