On Tuesday, Google unveiled a significant update for the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 2, introducing a new privacy-oriented feature that was previously exclusive to Pixel smartphones. According to the tech giant based in Mountain View, California, users in the United States can now utilize the Scam Detection feature on their compatible Pixel Watch, allowing them to receive notifications about potential scam callers without needing to reach for their phones.
Scam Detection on Pixel Watch
In a recent post on its community forum, Google elaborated on how the Scam Detection feature functions on the Pixel Watch models. This tool utilizes on-device artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze patterns commonly associated with scams during phone calls. It is designed to identify these patterns, flag them, and alert users in real time while they are engaged in a conversation. The feature operates when the Pixel Watch is connected to a compatible device, namely the Pixel 9 series.
Once activated, users will hear a beep at the beginning of a call and at intervals thereafter. The feature continuously operates in the background during calls that may be scams. Should it recognize a suspicious conversational pattern, it promptly notifies the user through sound, vibration, and on-screen alerts. Users have the option to dismiss the notification or terminate the call directly from their Pixel Watch.
It is important to note that this feature is not functional for direct calls received on the LTE models of the smartwatch.
Initially announced as part of the Pixel March Drop, the Scam Detection feature was limited to the Pixel 9 and newer models. With the recent update for the Pixel Watch series, Google enables users to remain vigilant against scam calls, all from their wrist without needing to look at their phones.
While the Scam Detection feature utilizes Gemini Nano on the Pixel 9 series, older devices rely on machine learning models processed on the device itself. Currently, it is available on the Pixel Watch 3 and Watch 2, provided they are paired with a Pixel 9 or newer device via Bluetooth in the US and operate in English. Google has stated that while this feature is designed to aid Pixel users in identifying scam calls, it is not infallible, as scammers frequently adapt their techniques. The company advises users to exercise caution when answering calls from unknown individuals.
